Graduate School Credit for Hakomi Therapy Trainings

In general, a number of graduate programs over the years have given Hakomi Therapy students credits toward their degrees for taking Hakomi trainings. The normal expectation is that students are enrolled in a school’s program and ask permission for such credit before taking the Hakomi training. It is rare that a school will give credit for trainings taken prior to admission, with the exception of some schools that give credit for life experience. Students should check with particular schools about their respective policies before enrolling in the school and/or a Hakomi training for which they hope to gain credit.

M.A. and Ph.D. in Somatic Psychology or Clinical Psychology
Santa Barbara Graduate Institute

The Hakomi Institute offers specific trainings that are approved by Santa Barbara Graduate Institute (SBGI) for 3 semester units (45 training hours) toward a master’s or doctoral degree through SBGI. Additional training hours may apply as graduate credit depending on enrollment in various program tracks. For example, SBGI’s post-master’s doctorate program in clinical psychology with a specialty in somatic psychology will grant up to 6 semester units (90 training hours) for supervised Hakomi training.

How is this different than other master’s or doctoral programs?
This is the only doctoral degree program in the United States that incorporates specialized trainings in the field of somatic psychology that are provided by independent organizations affiliated with SBGI. Again, supervised Hakomi training may also be applied to master’s level degrees in somatic psychology at SBGI.

Guiding Perspectives
To meet the growing demand for specialization in specific therapeutic modalities and flexibility in educational programs, SBGI brings together state-of-the-art clinical training with solid academic programs that meet requirements for graduate degrees as well as clinical licensure, where desired.

Those who wish to pursue in-depth study in an approved professional training program such as Hakomi may receive graduate credit toward a master’s or doctoral degree in the somatic psychology department programs at SBGI. The remainder of study is completed at the SBGI campus during scheduled on campus class sessions focusing on the clinical skills, relational, and experiential qualities of study while theoretical based online study allows adults learners to complete graduate level education from a distance.

In order to receive credit for a supervised training, students must first be admitted and registered in a degree program at SBGI. Credit will only be given for training approved by the somatic psychology department chair taken after enrollment at SBGI and no graduate credit is given for prior learning.

When does the SBGI academic year start?
SBGI offers rolling admission with cohorts beginning in the fall and spring semesters. Please know that students are permitted to begin their graduate studies at SBGI part-time and may choose to enroll only in the independent study courses for which a professional training such as Hakomi would apply but they must apply and have been accepted to the term by the first day of the semester and must complete the hours and additional academic requirements for independent study courses within that term.

How often do I attend SBGI?
Please refer to the academic calendar and format information on the SBGI website at www.sbgi.edu

What amount of coursework will be done online?
Approximately 50% of SBGI coursework will be conducted at a distance using online discussion forums, teleconferences, video and/or audio lectures. Again, SBGI values the experiential and relational components of learning that are the focus of concentrated on-campus study. The online topics are focused on theory and delivered via asynchronous discussion forums and lectures.
